Events

As well as more general, ongoing community engagement, a number of events were held in the East Marsh area during the programme to engage with residents and othes.

KOPS Advice Day

A one-day advice day was organised at Grimsby Neighbourhood Centre by VANEL as part of their Keeping Older People Safe (KOPS) programme. The day brought together dozens of Safer Streets partners to offer community safety and security advice, information and support to local older residents.

Movies on the Marsh

East Marsh Involve and local Ward Councillors took on the challenge of staging two very major public events in Grant Thorold Park during the summer. “Movies on the Marsh” brought in a film and theatre organisation to project family films onto a huge portable screen in the park at the end of two family event days. Entertainment, activities, refreshments and more took place during the day leading up to the film showing (Doctor Dolittle and Shrek!).

The events brought many hundreds of local people into the park to enjoy themselves, picnic and meet together. It was also an opportunity for Safer Streets partners such as VANEL to engage with residents to share information.

The two event days were a huge success and proved categorically how popular Grant Thorold Park could be for positive activities.

Pride

A Pride event in Freeman Street Market in East Marsh was an opportunity for the East Marsh United Safer Streets team to get involved and to share community safety information with attendees. Personal alarms were handed out to dozens of people during the events.

VAWG

As part of the Council led Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) programme, Council staff from the Safer Communities Team and a local Police Sergeant ran a day in and around Grant Thorold Park to engage with women and girls and to hand out personal alarms and other items of security equipment.

Closedown Event

On the very last day of the programme, all the participating partners from the Safer Streets East Marsh programme got together at Empower offices to hold a celebratory and reflective event. It was also the official launch of the showcase film produced to record the Safer Streets programme. A very well attended partnership event.

Other events

Whilst Safer Streets specifically funded or organised these events, they also provided a catalyst for other organisations to deliver other local resident engaging events during the programme.

For example, East Marsh Involve and local Ward Councillors organised a number of “Book hunt” events for young people in Buffalo Bills Garden (in Grant Thorold Park). EMU also ran a volunteer engagement event to plant new trees in Grant Thorold Park.
